Critic Reviews for Carrie. With each new movie, [De Palma] comes closer to mastering Hitchcock's trademark of teasing suspense and tongue-in-cheek horror. A voluptuously shot horror movie. More superpowers from Brian De Palma, this time in high school, in a screen version of a Stephen King novel that's become a horror classic. An exercise in high style that even the most unredeemably rational among moviegoers should find enormously enjoyable. Carrie is a modest but effective shock-suspense drama about a pubescent girl, her evangelical mother and cruel schoolmates. This 1976 thriller, about a high school outcast (Sissy Spacek) who uses her telekinetic powers to massacre the graduating class, contains a number of interesting ideas. We list 10 differences between Kimberly Peirce’s 2013 'Carrie' remake & Brian De Palma's original 1976 movie - based on the 1974 Stephen King novel. Information from the Internet Movie Database about the 1976 film Carrie. Carrie is a 1976 American supernatural horror film based on Stephen King's 1974 epistolary novel of the same name. The film was directed by Brian De Palma and. But as with most of his films, De Palma can't keep track of them. The real horror of Carrie does not lie with the vengeful, telepathic teenager of the movie's title, but in the endless stream of abuse she endures for the majority of its runtime. Like Jaws, here's one of those rare instances when the movie is better than the book. What's more, this box office hit easily remains the best adaptation of a King property (sorry, Shawshank and Shining groupies). One of cinema's ultimate operatic teenage melodramas. I have seen "Carrie" more times than I can count, and yet it never loses its uncommon heartbreak and blood-curdling dramatic power. Carrie won't add much to your life -- but it will scare you, not least about your friends and neighbours. Stephen King's book outlines a world ringed with abuse, Brian De Palma visualizes it with vast amounts of pervy humor and ominous effulgence. a cautionary tale that suggests that fear of the unusual justifies any action to displace the potential danger. My, how times have changed. Audience Reviews for Carrie. De Palma surprises us with his splendid choice of making a very delicate and emotionally resonant drama from King's novel (with a magnificent direction, even if not so well edited), and he leaves the horror only for the tragic climactic explosion of blood and fury in the end. One of the best horror films out there to date! Although "Carrie" has a slow start and the first half is all build up, the pay-off is much more worth it than you would expect. As a teenage girl is bullied in her senior year, she discovers an odd ability she has to levitate and move certain things with her mind. It's less of a jerky horror flick than a bone-chilling creepy one. I felt myself gulping by the end of the film at how eerie they were able to pull off her abilities and how many symbolic moments came from this film. It may not have all the tense moments you want, but the last 25 minutes will absolutely blow your mind. The camera techniques are very questionable, but commendable, the editing is done perfectly, and this film could not have been directed better. "Carrie" is one of those rare treats that doesn't come around very often! Its terrific. I tend to remain largely unaffected by most horror films, but "Carrie" (while not quite 'scary') manages to be consistently creepy in that mysterious, unsettling sort of way. It's a triumph of suspenseful storytelling as well as a strange commentary on youth that still feels shockingly relevant today.

Rated PG for some thematic elements. "God's Not Dead 2" is the follow-up to the huge 2014 box-office hit from the same studio that brought out similar Christian-themed movies like "Do You Believe" and "Faith of Our Fathers. " These aren't Christian movies like, say, Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ," Carl Dreyer's "The Passion of Joan of Arc," or D. Holistic Doctor Death Series: Over 60 Dead In Just Over A Year. Editor’s note: VIDEO above isn’t current, but I’m updating daily. Sadly, we now have about 80. Griffith's massive epic "Intolerance. " Those were films vibrating with faith that also had high and often visionary artistic value. But "Faith of Our Fathers," "Do You Believe," "God's Not Dead," and now "God's Not Dead 2" are cheaply and often shoddily made, and aimed at a specific demographic. The films are the ultimate in preaching to the choir. They're so rooted to this specific time and place in American evangelical Christianity that future generations, even Christian generations, might watch them and ask each other, "Wait. can someone look up 'Duck Dynasty,' because it seems to have been very important to these people. "God's Not Dead" told the story of a young Christian college student locked in a battle of wills with an atheist philosophy professor who wants his students to declare "God Is Dead. " The movie was crowded with as many subplots as an entire season of a television series, complete with a rousing concert at the end by the Christian pop group Newsboys. "God's Not Dead 2" (like that old recurring joke from " Saturday Night Live": "Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead") gathers together much of the same cast of characters, including the Newsboys (and both were directed by Harold Cronk, and scripted by Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman). The sequel moves the action to a high school. Grace Wesley (Melissa Joan Hart)—her first and last name symbolic of her importance to Christianity—teaches AP History, and one day answers a question in class about the connection between the teachings of Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. and the teachings of Jesus. Grace answers, quoting Scripture. The parents of the student who asked the question complain to the school. They define themselves as "rationalists" and "free thinkers" (code words for "atheism" in the world-view of "God's Not Dead 2," and if you didn't get that, then just look at the mother's cold-bitch Alexis Carrington wardrobe as well as the fact that she doesn't grieve her young son's death). Grace is called on the carpet, she refuses to apologize, and the whole thing ends up being battled out in a court of law under the watchful eyes of the nation. The court case has its moments of interest, and plays out as it would in real-life, with different groups of protesters screaming at each other on the courthouse steps, and the constant chatter of the various zealot-outrage-brigades on television. The only really good scene in the movie features real-life cold case homicide detective, J. Warner Wallace, who used his forensic statement analysis skills on the gospels, resulting in a book called "Cold Case Christianity. " He's put on the stand in defense of poor, wronged Grace Wesley, and his testimony is simply delivered and thought-provoking. The gorgeous Jesse Metcalfe, as Grace's lawyer, gives a good performance as well. The character is a public defender assigned to her case. He is not a Christian, but feels strongly that she was not preaching or proselytizing in the classroom, but merely answering a question posed to her. Metcalfe adds at least a layer of nuance to the ham-fisted proceedings. There's one particularly low moment, though, where we are treated to the spectacle of a white man schooling the clueless African-American principal of the school (Robin Givens) about what Martin Luther King really meant in his famous letter from the Birmingham jail. Like "God's Not Dead," there are a lot of subplots, some that have to do (tangentially) with the court case, and others not at all. A young Chinese student who discovers he is a Christian has a painful fight with his father that is well played (although this is the sort of movie where a son says, "Father, I'm a Christian!" and the father whacks him across the face. Still: it's a nice scene. ) A young reporter whose cancer is in remission doesn't know how she feels about Jesus anymore. David A. R. White reprises his role as the friendly pastor Dave (White was also one of the leads in "Faith of Our Fathers"), who experiences life as a series of mishaps—spilled coffee, a stubbed toe, a burst appendix—but eventually realizes that "we" are at "war" here, and it's time to get serious about fighting back for faith. Director Harold Cronk doesn't find a way to blend these scenes into a whole, although thematically each character struggles with an aspect of faith. Scenes sometimes just sit there, or taper off in an amateurish way, one example being a scene that ends with a character saying, "I'm going to go get a cup of coffee" and then off he goes to get a cup of coffee. Cue curtain. Flow is essential in a film with so many storylines, but when the action moves away from the courthouse in "God's Not Dead 2," you can almost hear the gears creaking as the story shifts its focus. "God's Not Dead 2" is filled with a sense of paranoiac persecution and seething resentment towards secular public schools, the ACLU, government interference and those who don't care for "Duck Dynasty. " The movie is loaded with simplistic "Us vs. Them" thinking, comforting, perhaps, to those in agreement, but extremely disturbing to those not on board. The atheist mother is more upset when she learns that her dead son read the Bible than the fact that he is dead. Ray Wise shows up as the ACLU attorney, a character who makes Robert Shapiro (as gorgeously played by John Travolta in "The People vs. O. Simpson") seem subtle. He is the personification of evil, sneering and snickering, preening and murmuring, assuring the atheist parents in an early meeting, "We will prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that God is dead. Early persecuted Christians would scratch the Ichthys symbol in the sand, the "fish" a secret code amongst themselves in dangerous times: "I'm a believer. Are you?" The "persecution" portrayed in "God's Not Dead 2" is ratcheted up by people's paranoia about the tyranny to come, but now, instead of scratching the fish in the sand, they murmur "Duck Dynasty" to one another. That's how they know they are among friends. It's inadvertently hilarious. There are serious movies about the Christian faith, about the persecution of the faithful, and about the intolerance that goes both ways. "God's Not Dead 2" is not one of them. Popular Blog Posts. An odd thought occurred to me a few hours after I saw writer/director Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel" for the first time. It was that Anderson would be the ideal director for a film of "Lolita," or a mini-series of "Ada. " Now I know that "Lolita" has been filmed, twice, but the fundamental problem with each version has nothing to do with ability to depict or handle risky content but with a fundamental misapprehension that Nabokov's famous novel took place in the "real world. " For all the authentic horror and tragedy of its story, it does not. "I am thinking of aurochs and angels, the secret of durable pigments, prophetic sonnets, the refuge of art," Humbert Humbert, the book's monstrous protagonist/narrator, writes at the end of "Lolita. " Nabokov created Humbert so Humbert might create his own world (with a combination of detail both geographically verifiable and stealthily fanciful), a refuge from his own wrongdoing. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" uses a not dissimilar narrative stratagem, a nesting-doll contrivance conveyed in a blink-and-you'll-miss-a-crucial-part-of-it opening. A young lady visits a park and gazes at a bust of a beloved "Author," who is then made flesh in the person of Tom Wilkinson, who then recalls his younger self in the person of Jude Law, who then recounts his meeting with Mr. Moustafa (F. Murray Abraham), the owner of the title hotel. Said hotel is a legendary edifice falling into obsolescence, and Law's "Author" is curious as to why the immensely wealthy Moustafa chooses to bunk in a practically closet-size room on his yearly visits to the place. Over dinner. Moustafa deigns to satisfy the writer's curiosity, telling him of his apprenticeship under the hotel's one-time concierge, M. Gustave (Ralph Fiennes). All of this material is conveyed not just in the standard Wes Anderson style, e. , meticulously composed and designed shots with precise and very constricted camera movements. In "Hotel" Anderson's refinement of his particular moviemaking mode is so distinct that his debut feature, the hardly unstylized "Bottle Rocket," looks like a Cassavetes picture by comparison. So, to answer some folks who claim to enjoy Anderson's movies while also grousing that they wish he would apply his cinematic talents in a "different" mode: no, this isn't the movie in which he does what you think you want, whatever that is. What he does is his own thing, which in terms of achievement is on a similar level of difficulty to what Nabokov kept upping the ante on in his English-language novels: to conjure poignancy and tragedy in the context of realms spun off from but also fancifully, madly removed from dirt-under-your-fingernails "reality. " M. Gustave is a didact of high-level service, schooling young Zero Moustafa in the art of understanding what a guest wants, and getting it to the guest, before the guest has even thought of it. He wears a scent called "Eau de Panache. " He's also a ludicrous horndog and gigolo, and his troubles begin when the wealthiest of his dowagers (Tilda Swinton) dies and leaves him a strange painting. The dowager's impossibly evil son (Adrian Brody) wishes M. Gustave to get nothing, and will stop at nothing to see to that. His determination sets into motion a series of intimidations and assaults that's complicated by the rise of an ostensibly Fascist power in the often-candy-colored Middle-Europe Bohemian Theme Park Anderson and his production designers conjure up here. (Since I've invoked Nabokov twice in this review, I really ought to emphasize that the movie itself credits the writings of Stefan Zweig, the Austrian writer whose wry, poignant autobiography was titled "The World of Yesterday," as a primary inspiration. The dialogue is contemporary American, with plenty of cursing; the action is often grisly slapstick, with an upping of the imperiled-animal quotient that provided one of the more disquieting scenes of Anderson's last feature, "Moonrise Kingdom. " The references are multitudinous, and come from everywhere (one of my favorites is a cable car sequence nodding to Carol Reed's 1940 thriller "Night Train To Munich"). The cast is the usual top-to-bottom array of incredible talent, including, aside from the aforementioned, Matthew Amalric, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Léa Seydoux, and Anderson stalwarts Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, and Owen Wilson. (Newcomer Tony Revolori plays the young Moustafa. ) The settings include not just the hotel but also a dank prison, a heavenly bakeshop, and all manner of horse drawn or steam-driven conveyances. Although it's packed with incident, there's a stillness to the film that makes looking at it feel as if you're staring at a zoetrope image of a snow globe, while at the same time a stray epithet here or the spectacle of some severed digits there pulls in a different direction, suggesting Anderson's conjured world is subject to tensions that exist entirely outside of it, calling attention to that which is unseen on the screen: an anxious creator who wants everything just so, but can't control the intrusion of vulgarity or cruelty. This tension is reflected in the character of M. Gustave himself, whose air of refinement masks a boyish exuberance and vulgarity, and who is nevertheless revealed at the movie's end to be a human being of absolute nobility. As much as "The Grand Budapest Hotel" takes on the aspect of a cinematic confection, it does so to grapple with the very raw and, yes, real stuff of humanity from an unusual but highly illuminating angle. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" is a movie about the masks we conjure to suit our aspirations, and the cost of keeping up appearances. "He certainly maintained the illusion with remarkable grace," one character remarks admiringly of another near the end of the movie. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" suggests that sometimes, as a species, that's the best we can do. Anderson the illusion-maker is more than graceful, he's dazzling, and with this movie he's created an art-refuge that consoles and commiserates. It's an illusion, but it's not a lie. ALIVE INSIDE is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity. Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett chronicles the astonishing experiences of individuals around the country who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music. His camera reveals the uniquely human connection we find in music and how its healing power can triumph where prescription medication falls short. This stirring documentary follows numerous visionaries in healthcare including social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. Rossato-Bennett visits family members who have witnessed the miraculous effects of personalized music on their loved ones, and offers illuminating interviews with experts including renowned neurologist and best-selling author Oliver Sacks ( Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain ), healthcare visionaries Dr. Bill Thomas, Dr. Al Powers, Naomi Fiel, and musician Bobby McFerrin (“Don’t Worry, Be Happy”). Empathy, the sharing of the pain and the joy of another human being is the core power of Documentary Film-making. "Alive Inside" changed the world for many elders, but the film's questions still remain- How were so many of our elders forgotten? Can we reconnect them to life. To answer these questions, to teach the themes of the film and inspire action, we created The Alive Inside Foundation. To support this teaching we have created Educational Materials, "The Alive Inside APP," Mp3 All-in-One Headphones and Community outreach assets, all aimed at inspiring a generation of young people to explore empathy and elderhood through music. We bring this educational challenge to Schools, Universities, and places of worship. Be our partner. 100% of Donations go to teaching and implementing the themes of "Alive Inside!". All Donations are 100% Tax-Deductible-. Alive Inside Theater. Alive Inside Theater. This stirring documentary follows social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. Rossato-Bennett visits family members who have witnessed the miraculous effects of personalized music on their loved ones, and offers illuminating interviews with experts including renowned neurologist and best-selling author Oliver Sacks (Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain) and musician Bobby McFerrin (“Don’t Worry, Be Happy”). An uplifting cinematic exploration of music and the mind, ALIVE INSIDE’s inspirational and emotional story left audiences humming, clapping and cheering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award.
